🗺️ The Perfect Walking Itinerary Between Central Station and the Sabl
Have you just stepped off the train at Brussels Central Station, perhaps carrying heavy luggage or simply filled with a curious spirit, and are now wondering what the best way is to reach the prestigious and elegant Sablon neighborhood? While it is extremely easy to blindly follow the major asphalted boulevards, get lost in the maze of large modern avenues, or confine yourself to the monotony of the STIB underground metro lines, you risk completely missing out on what makes the indefinable, poetic, and historical charm of our beautiful capital: its secret cobblestone streets, its surprising topography separating the upper and lower parts of the city, and its small hidden squares steeped in centuries of history. 🧭
At Big Mama, we have been welcoming travelers from all over the world, neighborhood regulars, and passionate food lovers since 2001. Our establishment is ideally nestled at the very heart of this geographic and historic transition zone between the medieval center and the aristocratic heights of Brussels. Because we firmly believe that a great meal always begins with a beautiful urban discovery, we have designed the ultimate guide and the ideal walking itinerary for you. It is a smooth, confidential, and rewarding 15 to 20-minute walk that transforms a simple logistical commute into a genuine cultural and sensory exploration. Get your notebook ready, prepare your camera, and follow the guide of Brussels insiders. 🚶♂️✨
Step 1: Exiting Central Station and the Carrefour de l'Europe 🚉
As soon as you step through the large glass doors of Brussels Central Station — an absolute masterpiece of Art Deco architecture designed by the famous Belgian master Victor Horta and completed after his death —, you emerge directly onto the Carrefour de l'Europe. This is where the pulse of travelers' very first steps in the capital beats. Most tourists immediately yield to the call of the crowds and turn right, mechanically heading down Rue de l'Infante Isabelle to reach the Grand-Place.
For our secret itinerary, we are going to do the exact opposite. Turn your back on the hustle and bustle of mass tourism circuits and head slightly to your left toward Rue du Cardinal Mercier. By crossing this artery, you begin a smooth transition off the beaten track. You will quickly notice that the architecture begins to change, giving way to better-preserved buildings and a significantly calmer, almost village-like atmosphere that heralds the authentic historic quarters of the capital.
Step 2: The Bucolic Climb of the Mont des Arts Garden and its Unique Panorama 🌳
Direct your steps toward the few stone stairs rising ahead of you to enter the Mont des Arts Garden. This monumental architectural and urban complex was initially commissioned by the builder King Leopold II at the end of the 19th century to connect the political hub of the upper town with the commercial heart of the lower town. Today, it is an urban park of rare elegance, characterized by its perfectly symmetrical flower beds, its rectilinear fountains, and its rows of sharply trimmed plane trees.
Take your time to stroll along the paths and listen to the numerous street musicians (violinists, guitarists, or hang drum players) who take advantage every day of the perfect acoustics offered by the large concrete arcades. At the very top of the belvedere, just before reaching the equestrian statue of King Albert I, you must absolutely stop to admire the view. It is one of the most famous, photographed, and striking panoramas in Belgium. Before your eyes, the perspective stretches spectacularly, aligning the geometric garden, the roofs of the historic center, and ending in an apotheosis on the majestic Gothic spire of the Brussels Town Hall pointing proudly into the sky. On a clear day, you can even discern the Atomium and Heysel structures in the distance. It is the ideal spot to understand the architectural duality and richness of Brussels at a single glance.
Step 3: The Secret Passage Through the Historic Oasis of the Place de la Vieille Halle aux Blés 🎙️
After immortalizing this landscape from the top of the Mont des Arts, do not make the classic mistake of continuing straight toward the Place Royale or the Magritte Museum. Instead, branch off to the right onto Rue de l'Empereur. Walk along the ancient city walls and then discreetly slip into the charming and narrow Rue de la Putterie. In the space of just a few strides, the scenery changes radically. You leave royal monumentality behind to emerge into a true oasis of calm, cobblestones, and ancient facades: the Place de la Vieille Halle aux Blés.
It is here, completely away from the deafening tumult of the central boulevards and sheltered from traditional tourist circuits, that the heart of our neighborhood lies, as well as the address of the Big Mama restaurant. Take time to stop in the center of this picturesque triangular square to greet the bronze statue of Jacques Brel, sculpted with his arms wide open, appearing to welcome every visitor in song.
Soak up the history of the location: since the Middle Ages, this square housed the grain hall essential to the life of the city, before becoming in the 17th century the hub of the postal network run by the princely Thurn und Taxis family. It was from here that stagecoaches departed for France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The spirit of hospitality, welcoming travelers, and good humor has remained deeply rooted through the centuries.
Step 4: Climbing to the Grand Sablon Through the Picturesque Rue de Rollebeek ⛪
Once your batteries are recharged by the peaceful atmosphere of our square, resume your progression toward the Sablon. Cross Rue de l'Hôpital and then enter the magnificent Rue de Rollebeek. This pedestrian alley is undeniably one of the oldest, most authentic, and most photogenic in all of Brussels. As you walk up, you will notice its cobblestones polished by centuries and its superb traditional houses built of red brick and white stone, typical of the Flemish Renaissance architectural style, with their famous stepped gables cutting into the sky.
Rue de Rollebeek climbs gently but firmly toward the heights of the city, acting as a true historical umbilical cord between the lower and upper parts of Brussels. It is a true medieval postcard preserved from the ravages of time. At the end of this visual and physical climb, you emerge directly onto the forecourt of the majestic Notre-Dame des Victoires au Sablon Church. You have finally arrived! The prestigious Grand Sablon neighborhood, renowned worldwide for its high-end antique dealers, contemporary art galleries, and the elegant storefronts of the greatest Belgian master chocolatiers, opens up before you in all its splendor.
